Smart Access for Locking Systems
Integrating Digital Keys into Your Locking Systems
Would you like to expand your product portfolio to include smartphone-based access? With Digital Key Smart Access, you’ll gain a backend solution for digital keys and access rights. The focus is on integration into your systems and applications—for example, in hotels and office buildings.
Here’s how we proceed: We’ll work with you to assess the requirements for your product and then determine what a suitable pilot project might look like. From your car to your front door: one key in your wallet, one backend for every access point.
From Electronic Locks to Digital Access
Physical keys are handed over, copied, and rarely lost—but when they are, it becomes time-consuming and costly. This applies just as much to vacation rentals as it does to hotel rooms and office buildings. A digital key requires more than just a connected lock. Keys must be issued, have a time limit, and be revoked when necessary. The Digital Key has already solved this problem in vehicles. With the Aliro standard, there is now a common foundation for doors and buildings.
Our Solution at a Glance:
- Manufacturer-independent—API-based software solution that is easy to integrate for all manufacturers
- No dedicated app required on the lock—The key is stored in the iPhone and Android smartphone wallet, not in a manufacturer’s app
- One backend, many scenarios—Private homes, vacation rentals, hotels, and corporate buildings—all using the same product
- Integratable—Booking platforms, hotel, and corporate systems control access via interfaces
From Handing Over a Physical Key to Digital Access
Smart Access Guaranteed Based on Role, Time, and Area
Delegate Responsibility
Access through the doors is ensured
The Digital Key got its start in the car. We’ve been developing it since 2016, and since 2024 as a core member of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). What emerged from that work now extends far beyond the vehicle: secure key delivery to a digital wallet, sharing with others, and immediate revocation. We’re now bringing these principles to the front door. With Aliro, there’s now a standard for this, and we’re providing the backend infrastructure. – Markus Beller, Product Owner, Digital Key Smart Access
Your Partner for a Future-Proof Digital Key Solution
10 Years of Digital Key Expertise
We have been developing the Digital Key since 2016 and have been a CCC Core Member since 2024. Our backend has been CCC-certified in the “Vehicle OEM Server” category since 2026. We think in terms of everything from individual vehicles to entire fleets.
Security from the Start
Certificate-based keys, short validity periods with automatic renewal, and revocation directly at the lock. Keys are stored in a secure wallet, not in the app.
Open to Your Systems & Your Customers
You can integrate booking platforms, hotel systems, and corporate systems via APIs. You can also connect your own user management systems.
How Your Smart Access Works
For lock manufacturers, Digital Key Smart Access becomes a reality when the key lifecycle is clearly managed in the backend:
- Access permissions are granted for specific doors and time periods
- Changes or revocations are initiated via interfaces and implemented in conjunction with the lock.
- To this end, locks, devices, and permissions are managed within the respective manufacturer and customer context.
- Wallet integration, specific interfaces, and delegated permissions are defined in the integration concept. Which features are available in a pilot are agreed upon in advance.
A Backend for Your Digital Access Solution

Digital Access for Hotels and Office Buildings
Office Access—Based on Time, Location, and Role
- Employees, service providers , and visitors are granted access based on their role, area, and time of day.
- For building and facility management, the potential benefits include centrally managed access permissions and reduced coordination for temporary access.
- Which roles, systems, and locations are to be supported is defined based on the specific application.
Guest Access—Based on Your Reservation and Stay
- Family members and guests can unlock the door with their smartphones. No need to hand over keys.
- A guest is granted access to their room(s) and authorized areas for the duration of their stay. If the reservation changes, access rights are adjusted accordingly.
- For hotel managers, the benefits include fewer manual key hand-offs and a better integration of booking and access processes.
Aliro: The Standard for Smart Access in Buildings
Aliro is the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) standard for digital access keys. It defines how smartphones and locks communicate with each other and how a digital key is structured. Among other things, it addresses applications in businesses and hotels.
What the CCC standard is for vehicles, Aliro is for doors. Both follow the same basic principles: certificate-based keys, wallet integration, and controlled sharing.
