The 13th Meeting of the .NET UserGroup Friedrichshafen Was All About Virtual Reality!

29. August 2016 | Monday

Microsoft MVP Christian Glessner and Markus Frei from hololux not only presented the theory behind VR. There was also plenty of hands-on and live experience of this emerging mega-trend: thanks to the Microsoft HoloLens and the HTC Vive, every visitor was able to get their own impression of virtual reality.

As is so often the case at .NET UserGroup meetings, the seminar room was bursting at the seams. Participants from a wide range of companies accepted the invitation from the UserGroup operators and wanted to experience virtual reality at first hand.

The meeting started with a theoretical introduction to the topic. Microsoft MVP Christian Glessner took turns with his colleague Markus frei to present the various aspects. Among other things, they made it clear that a distinction must be made between two aspects in the context of virtual reality:

Augmented Reality (AR), which adds virtual aspects to the real world, and Virtual Reality (VR), in which reality disappears completely.

The speakers had the appropriate goggles with them for both representatives. The Microsoft HoloLens –, which is not yet available in Germany –, is the flagship product in the field of AR. The HTC Vive, on the other hand, in the field of VR.

After the obligatory meal break and a briefing on the glasses, there was then "VR to touch".

Each participant was allowed to try out both the Microsoft HoloLens and the HTC Vive extensively. For the vast majority of them, this was their first experience of virtual reality. The fascination of immersing themselves in a completely new world or expanding the room with images, games etc. captivated everyone. It is easy to imagine the impact these technologies will have on our lives in the coming years.
