Even before the official date, the BMW i3, the BMW Group's first electric vehicle, was presented at the Unterberger dealership in Lindau. Around 300 guests came to Lindau last week to herald the start of this new era of e-mobility.
As the ticking of the countdown could be heard, the guests crowded towards the stage. Everyone wanted to catch the first glimpse of the zero-emission vehicle. The BMW i3 was unveiled and presented to the interested audience to the accompaniment of the a capella band Swinging Bones. Made from sustainable materials such as carbon, naturally tanned leather or kenaf fibers, the BMW i's sustainability concept starts right at the production stage.
A vision you can touch
"A lot of energy has gone into this car. We are convinced that the vision of the BMW i works," says Dieter Unterberger, Managing Director of Autohaus Unterberger GmbH. The vision is holistic and clear: 360° ELECTRIC. This car is fully electric and will be convenient to use in the future thanks to an infrastructure that promotes this approach. Another convenient feature, for example, is that the BMW i can be charged in a standard socket as an alternative to the wallbox offered by BMW or public charging stations. BMW provides a comprehensive range of products and services for the i vehicles to meet individual customer needs in terms of energy supply and mobility concepts.
ConnectedDrive
doubleSlash Net-Business GmbH is significantly involved in the comfort of the BMW i. The assistance services of BMW ConnectedDrive were developed by the specialist for holistic software solutions from Friedrichshafen and offer the driver additional added value. For example, it is possible to reserve a charging station, check the vehicle's charge status via smartphone or be informed of critical events.
The navigation system plans routes very precisely based on the battery's charge status and can access a wealth of up-to-date online information."With 100% driving pleasure and 0% emissions and with 360° ELECTRIC, the BMWi has everything that makes up the mobility of tomorrow. Together with Stadtwerke Lindau and the company doubleSlash from Friedrichshafen as cooperation partners, we as a BMW i Agent are contributing to sustainable, urban mobility," emphasizes Reiner Eenhuis, Managing Director of Autohaus Unterberger in Lindau.
Promoting infrastructure
However, e-mobility can only work if the necessary infrastructure is provided. This is where cities and municipalities are called upon to continuously expand the infrastructure for e-mobility concepts. Concepts that provide free parking for electric vehicles, for example, can increase their attractiveness.
The Unterberger car dealership inaugurated a charging station in its own parking lot in Lindau as part of the BMW i presentation. doubleSlash is also very keen to expand the infrastructure for e-mobility in Friedrichshafen. With the installation of a charging station at the Competence Center Friedrichshafen and a sharing model for a BMW i for CPF employees, a first step towards emission-free driving is to be taken. "We want the population to get to grips with e-mobility," says Matthias Neher, car IT expert at doubleSlash, explaining the motivation.
It has been scientifically proven that the average distance covered per day in a household is around 45 kilometers. In everyday life, these are therefore mainly distances that can be easily covered with an electric vehicle. New mobility concepts and a good infrastructure are the be-all and end-all for the acceptance of e-mobility. With the BMW i, a major step towards acceptance has been taken. Because the era of e-mobility is not over - it is just getting started.
