Catena-X: Working together to transform the automotive industry

End-to-end networking of the value chain with the Catena-X data ecosystem

The vision of the automotive industry with Catena-X

A data ecosystem for the value chain in which all partners can meet on equal ground – trustworthy, collaborative, open and secure. For a digital, global data exchange based on European values.

  • On an equal footing: All partners have equal rights and data sovereignty.
  • Trustworthy: The provided solution and governance are convincing and provide a basis for trust in the community.
  • Open: The data ecosystem is based on open source solutions that are transparently available to all.
  • Sustainable solution also for medium-sized and small companies.

What it’s all about

Digital traceability of material flows along the entire supply chain in the automotive industry.

The goal

To provide an environment for the creation, operation and collaborative use of end-to-end data chains along the entire automotive value chain.

Catena-X: The consortium for end-to-end value chains in the automotive industry

Catena-X Automotive Network: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch and other pioneering companies founded the consortium to create end-to-end value chains in the automotive industry.

The network was first announced at the Digital Summit of the German Federal Government in December 2020, and the association Catena-X Automotive Network e.V. was founded on May 7, 2021, creating a legally secure framework for the collaboration and the achievement of its goals.

The Catena-X consortium is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the funding program "Future Investments in the Automotive Industry", and the current central development work is set to continue until mid-2024.

How Catena-X supports you in the real working world – between value creation and traceability

Data chains for value creation in the automotive industry

  • Interoperability and data sovereignty are fundamental values of our network.
  • The Item Relationship Service (IRS) forms an essential foundation for various services and products within the Catena-X network and increases business value.
    • IRS functionalities serve specific requirements such as occasion-based traceability from the Supply Chain Act.
    • IDSA and Gaia-X principles, such as data interoperability and sovereignty, are maintained on the Catena-X network and access to dispersed data is enabled. Data chains are established as a common asset.
    • With the help of the IRS, data chains can be provided ad-hoc across n-tiers within the Catena-X network. To realise these data chains, the IRS relies on data models of the traceability use case and provides the federated data chains to customers or applications.

Traceability as the backbone of Catena-X

  • The value creation of a vehicle is complex: from production to use to recycling, all processes must be closely coordinated and transparent. This is achieved through traceability.
  • Information on each work step is recorded on the basis of process and parts lists. This creates continuous data chains that show exactly when and where which materials, components or software were used.
  • As a rule, each company documents its responsibilities itself. There are a small number of cases where traceability information is exchanged, however.
